I’ve decided to start a new section called ‘5 words or less’. In this I’ll review things in exactly that, 5 words or less. I’ll review anything; films, albums, live shows, whatever you want! Let me know what you think of it!

Simple Plan - Get Your Heart On!

The album reminds me of the first Boys Like Girls album, poppy but not too sweet, with great guitar riffs and ultimately a great summer album. The melodies are catchy, and you’ll find yourself singing along to each song as they pass; but, you know that there will be certain tracks that you’ll always skip.

The previous album (self titled, Simple Plan) saw fans split. They strayed away from their usual pop punk sound to more of an alternative rock sound. This album goes back to the pop punk influences, however put the emphasis on pop. Songs like Summer Paradise (featuring rapper K’naan ) are really just pop songs. Not that there not enjoyable, just not what fans would be expecting. Ballad Gone Too Soon isn’t the most exciting track; sounding like a track from a Disney tween film (camp rock anybody?), with hopelessly predictable lyrics (hey there now, where’d you go, you left me here so unexpected, you changed my life – really?) and a key change thrown in at the peak of the songs yearning for a girl that cannot be theirs. These two songs put a lull in the album (chance to get a cup of tea?) before moving on to stronger material once again.

However, there are many positive things to say about the album. Opener, You Suck At Love, is a great pop punk track. This is followed by Can’t Keep My Hands Off You which features Weezer front man River Cuomo, which is another cracker. Something that should be mentioned is the great guests on this album; River Cuomo, Alex Gaskarth and Natasha Bedingfield (which shouldn’t work, but sounds great). They add a new dynamic, which helps to create interest throughout the whole record (apart from the before mentioned tea break…). One of the best tracks is Jet Lag which features pop star Natasha Bedingfield, the combo of Simple Plan and Bedingfield (Simplefield, Bedingplan?) shouldn’t work, but sounds great. The song is more alternative rock; but old fans will still be pleased with it. With the catchy chorus and great harmonies this is the one song I find myself playing over and over again. It is a classic summer tune, and will make a great single. Loser of the Year is another great tune; but the track after, Anywhere Else But Here, is a filler track which wouldn’t be out of place on a Jonas Brothers record.

However for me, the real high point of the album is Freaking Me Out, which features All Time Low front man Alex Gaskarth. It’s well written, well produced, catchy, with great guitar riffs and a dark edge to it. It is by far the best track on the album (almost redeeming tracks like Gone Too Soon). However, after listening you can’t help but wonder that if Simple Plan can write (and I mean really write) why does this album have so many none-songs on it? Simple Plan are clearly talented, that you cannot deny, so why songs like Anywhere Else But Here?

Overall, I enjoyed parts of the album but not other parts. It was a bit jumbled, with pop, punk and rock tracks all mixed together in no conceivable order. I understand that bands want to create a varied record; but maybe this was a step too far. There is no constant, which is a real shame as they’re such a talented band. So, give the record a listen and see what you think, just maybe skip tracks 8 and 9.

For fans of: All Time Low, McFly, Boys Like Girls
Listen to: Freaking Me Out, Jet Lag

A teaser for Forever The Sickest Kids upcoming self titles album, out March 1rst. They seem to have scrapped the ‘The Weekend’ idea, at least for now. However, this sounds considerably better than their last release, Friday. What do you think of this sound?

FINALLY the new Panic! At The Disco video for The Ballad Of Mona Lisa. I know many fans have been anxiously waiting for it, and they won’t be dissapointed. Going back to the A Fever days, with the steam punk theme and gothic location (reference to I Write Sins Not Tragedies?). This time, they did not fail to impress. Things are looking good again for Brendon and Spencer.
